Discounted/Clearance Larry Stack no longer with firm
June 08, 2009
Lawrence R. “Larry” Stack left the family New York City-based numismatic firm Stack’s May 22 after more than three decades. He was the director of numismatics at the time of his departure. No formal statement or reason was given by the firm for his leaving. When reached by telephone by Numismatic News and asked about it, he said, “No comment, OK?” When pressed again, he replied, “That was all I was permitted to say.” The Stack’s Web site was changed to remove Larry’s profile. The name of his sister, Susan Stack, was also removed from the Web site. President of the firm and overseer of the auction business is Christine Karstedt Larry’s father, Harvey, is still co-chairman along with Q. David Bowers. In the absence of a formal statement by the firm, collectors have been posting comments on the Collectors Universe Web site over subsequent days that have also been picked up and condensed by E-Sylum, a weekly Internet newsletter produced by Wayne Homrun for the Numismatic Bibliomania Society. Comments there included the not publicly acknowledged information that Stack’s was sold to Anderson Press, Inc., in 2008. “I’m sorry Larry is leaving the company. It’s always hard when someone like that departs,” said Chet Krause, retired former owner of Krause Publications and a longtime friend of the Stack firm. |
