Beuth Netherlands Collection to be Sold by Künker and Schulman
Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG and Laurens Schulman B.V. have undertaken the exciting task of auctioning the Lodewijk S. Beuth collection over multiple selections.
In 1950, Lodewijk Beuth began his coin collection, working closely with the Laurens Schulman family. As his interest and knowledge blossomed, Beuth decided to build a true record set, the largest and most beautiful coin collection in the Netherlands.
Beuth became a highly refined student of numismatics and economics, publishing his findings in journals and becoming involved in reforming the Dutch coinage system as the price of silver began to rise, and Gresham’s Law of “good money displaces bad money” nearly became a reality for the Netherlands. In 1967, the Dutch replaced silver with nickel, following Beuth’s reasoning, and avoided problems with local trade while ensuring healthy numismatic collection opportunities for future generations.
Collecting into his later years and instilling numismatic thinking in his son Hein, the Beuth Family collection took on the full breadth of Dutch coinage, including Kingdom, provinces, cities, emergency coins, patterns, and overseas territories, as well as Dutch paper money.
In a joint presentation, Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG and Laurens Schulman B.V. have undertaken the exciting task of auctioning the Lodewijk S. Beuth collection over multiple selections. Expect to see a wonderful mixture of great rarities and interesting varieties in gold and silver throughout this first offering set for sale on Sept. 27-28, 2023, in Osnabrück.
The descriptions of the Beuth collection in this sale are derived from Laurens Schulman’s digital handbook of Dutch coins 1795-2001, which is available free of charge at www. laurensschulman.nl. The coins of the Dutch overseas territories use the work “The Coins of the Dutch overseas territories 1601-1948” by C. Scholten. The rarity information also comes from the two works mentioned.
This auction catalog is so filled with high-resolution images of the coins and blow-up images of particular details of the varieties that the Beuth Collection auctions should quickly become beautiful references for many years to come.
