The inevitable question in the business of collectible coins is always going to be, “How are we doing?” Stack’s Bowers Galleries recently announced the company had a banner year in 2024. The company’s auctions realized $275.6 million, the highest value the company has ever achieved. An interesting sidebar: between February and December, the business sold five coins at more than $1 million each, the only company to sell any coins for at least that value during that time period, according to Stack’s.

Bullion and bullion-impacted coins had a stellar year as well. The World Gold Council reported the price of that precious metal increasing 25.5 percent during the year. This included 40 all-time highs, the best of which was $2,777 on October 30. The Silver Institute reported the spot price of silver increasing by 21.46 percent, “nearly touching $35 for the first time since 2012.” It wasn’t all collector or investor demand either. Industrial demand rose by seven percent, while jewelry and silverware demand rose by five percent during 2024.

The World Platinum Investment Council quarterly report released in September indicated demand for “the other white metal” to be at “an almost four-year high in Q2 [second quarter] …global platinum demand is forecasted to increase by three percent year-on-year.” Sources suggest the price of platinum will range between $850 and $1,220 during 2025, while the spot price of palladium will likely decline by two percent due to a lack of demand.

It’s hard to determine if it is simply irrational exuberance, but some analysts expect the bullion gold price to appreciate between $2,750 and $2,810 during 2025. Some analysts think silver will trade between $28 and $40 an ounce. This could be another growth year for coins.
