In a press release by Paper Money Guaranty®, we have learned that GreatCollections is offering up four pairs of 1861 printer's proofs of some of the earliest banknotes issued by the U.S. government. They are being offered during their online-only auction that ends Oct. 20, 2019.

For some, GreatCollections may sound familiar. That is because this is the same auction company that sold the NGC-certified Seated Liberty Half dollar Mint error that realized over $50,000. You can find that story here.

If you are unfamiliar with what a printer's proof is, it is a proof made by a banknote printer to test a note's design before production. The four pairs being offered by GreatCollections are:

  1. 1861 $5 Demand Note, Fr. 3, now graded PMG 63 Choice Unc
  2. 1861 $50 Interest Bearing, Fr. 207, now graded PMG 64 Choice Unc
  3. 1861 $100 Interest Bearing, Fr. 208, graded PMG 62 Unc
  4. 1861 $5,000 Interest Bearing, Fr. 211, graded PMG 63 Choice Unc.

The proofs were printed by the American Bank Note Co. of New York.

The 1861 Demand Notes were issued by the U.S. government to help cover the large cost of the Civil War. They are considered to be the first U.S. paper money. They are also known as "greenbacks."
