Interest in New Issue Market Expands

The market for collectibles, be they coins, stamps, antique toys, sports cards, fine art, or “other,” continues to perform well. There has always been a specialized market for new coin issues, both coins struck for circulating and non-circulating legal tender commemoratives.

The market for collectibles, be they coins, stamps, antique toys, sports cards, fine art, or “other,” continues to perform well. According to an article published in the Aug. 21 Wall Street Journal:

“Collectibles remain a hot commodity for investing and reselling, according to Market Decipher, a market-research firm, forecasting global collectibles sales to reach $1 trillion by 2033 … The overall global sneaker market is valued at $75.8 billion for 2023 and is expected to reach $100 billion by 2026, according to Statista, a German data-gathering company … The global comic book market … was valued at $15.3 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to $22.4 billion by 2030, according to Fortune Business Insights, a market research firm.”

If there is a billion-dollar market for sneakers, you can imagine the potential market that has yet to be reached for collectible coins. According to a 2022 CivicScience study, 38 percent of U.S. adults have or are participating in coin collecting. About 55 percent have never experienced coin collecting, with 7 percent looking to collect coins at some future date.

There has always been a specialized market for new coin issues, both coins struck for circulating and non-circulating legal tender commemoratives. This interest area appears to be expanding significantly, in part due to dealers but also due to the efforts of the United States and world mints. Interest is building not only for the coins at their moment of issue but also in secondary markets. The Coin of the Year awards presented by our sister publication, World Coin News, demonstrate not only the newest coin production technology but also that the aesthetics of these products are catching the eye of the general public. There is the future of coin collecting.
