Want Silver? Shop Costco
Coin collecting continues to get an unexpected boost from the very non-numismatic wholesale retailing giant Costco.
There’s a lot of positive activity taking place throughout the coin hobby. The recently released 2024-P Greatest Generation proof silver dollar sales outstripped sales for the remaining six numismatic products in the program on their first day of issue. Collectors are watching as the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee gets closer to suggesting a design for the 2026 platinum American Eagle commemorative, an event that was able to be watched and streamed live on YouTube. Overall sales of non-circulating legal tender commemorative U.S. Mint products continue to sell quickly upon their initial release, then continue to perform surprisingly well in secondary markets.
Coin collecting continues to get an unexpected boost from the very non-numismatic wholesale retailing giant Costco. Costco is now selling 1-ounce Canadian silver Maple Leaf coins (25 coins to the tube) online for $675 per tube. Costco members are limited to a maximum of five tubes each. Costco’s finance chief, Richard Galanti, explained that Costco sells precious metals (the company has previously sold 1-ounce gold ingots) as a way to reinforce its “treasure hunt” brand image. That sounds like a marketing phrase a coin dealer might use to entice new customers.
Bullion coins remain popular as the spot price of gold continues to surge and silver continues to perform robustly. New issues and bullion coins are not the only items stoking the market. An uncirculated 1882 (571-coin mintage) and proof 1883, 1884, and 1887 $20 double eagles are among truly rare coins entering the market after being unavailable for years. These rarities are a part of the March 28-31 U.S. Coins Signature Auction to be conducted by Heritage.
