Where do you see yourself and your collection in five years?

In the Dec. 29, 2023 edition of the Numismatic News eNewsletter, we asked our readers to ponder the short-term future of their collections.

I see no reason why my collection will not continue to improve in the next five years, although not as fast as it did during the pre-pandemic days. I plan to continually add to it as my budget permits. Prices on everything we buy have just simply skyrocketed in the past three years.

Hopefully, in five years, I will still be alive. (I’m 76.) If so, I plan to keep collecting until I die, as collecting coins is very enjoyable to me. Gives me something to do. Keeps me off the streets at night. But I do wish coin collecting wasn’t so expensive to do. Why does having so much fun cost so much? (To my wife’s dismay)

Hopefully, I will have the last few holes in my collection filled. The search is on.

Alive or dead, I don’t know. Alive, the collection should still be with me. Dead, it’ll be with my kids

In five years, I am hoping to begin selling off my collection. I’ll be way into my retirement and may want to pass on my wares to younger folks to enjoy. A great hobby to pass on to others. Of course, this is based on America not being taken over by China by then.

At 73, I continue to love collecting and interacting with Young Numismatists.

I am continuing to upgrade my type collection by incorporating classic, popular type coins and replacing my “run-of-the-mill” type coins, e.g., an MS-63 CAC 1937-D three-legged Buffalo nickel to replace my MS-671937 Buffalo nickel and an MS-63 CAC 1942/1941 Mercury dime to replace my MS-67 1944-D Mercury dime, etc. It is a challenging and fun endeavor that assuages my lifelong collector’s instinct.

At the same time, I buy nice, XF/AU-type coins to give out at our Young Numismatists coin club presentations. I love the kids’ expressions when, after a presentation on Large cents or “odd” denominations, I give out two or three XF Large cents or an AU 2-cent piece to the kids by drawing lots. Nice coins, so they can appreciate the designs. And I believe I am contributing to the establishment of a future generation of numismatists.
