The Verdugo Hills Coin Club of California held its 13th youth coin auction outreach program during its annual show March 25.
The club hosts the event in conjunction with the Numismatic Association of Southern California, the American Numismatic Association and local coin dealers.
“Action speaks louder than words, especially when it comes to connecting with and educating the next generation of collectors – and their parents, too – with the lore, history and fun of the numismatic hobby,” said Don Berry, VHCC president. “And it takes a genuine passion, commitment and lots of patience from coin clubs like ours and volunteers such as Jeanne LeFevre, Dick Covington and our favorite son, a nationally recognized youth dynamo extraordinaire, ANA VP Walt Ostromecki.”
“Thirty-three youngsters, ranging in ages from 7 to 17, aggressively vied for the 55 lots of donated numismatic items including U.S. proof and mint sets, U.S. large cents, paper money, Morgan silver dollars, Indian cents, Buffalo nickels, ancients, etc.,” said Berry.
During the 13 years of the youth auction, the club has introduced the numismatic hobby to hundreds of young people and added more than two dozen to its membership ranks. Youth-focused events such as this have also helped parents who were once collectors reconnect with the hobby, the club says.
“It is a focused ‘club-team’ outreach effort which helps make it a yearly success,” said John Duff, VHCC vice president and Los Angeles educator. “We couldn’t do it without the generous donations from coin club members and local coin dealers, especially Universal Coin in Glendale. This ... event is a hands-on life experience for youth.”
