Bringing a hammer price of $25,000 at the Lyn Knight Currency Auctions sale at the Chicago Paper Money Expo, March 5-7, was an 1890 $20 Treasury Note. The PCGS Abt. New 53-graded note, Fr. 372, was described as the fifth finest known.
Prices do not include the 15-18 percent buyer’s premium.
Sold for $24,000 was a 1902 Red Seal $50 The Commercial and Farmers National Bank of Baltimore, Md., E1303, Fr. 664 graded VF/XF and one of only two known from this charter. It carried purple stamped signatures of Harry M. Mason, the cashier, and W.A. Mason, president.
A highlight selling for $30,000 was a five-note set that included an uncut Original Series 1-1-1-2 sheet and a single note from the First National Bank of Oregon, Ill., 1011, Fr. 382 and 389, grade VF/XF.
“Here is likely the most exciting find of the sale as this bank was chartered in 1872 and closed in 1915. To date there are only five large notes reported on this Ogle County location. There were no $1 or $2 First Charters known before and this sheet, which has had the Deuce detached; the other three Aces remain attached.”
