On. Jan. 3, 2020, Spink held its “Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong” auction. During this auction, a group of seven PMG-certified sets of front and back artist's renditions for unissued Chinese banknotes created in the early 1970s realized HK$2.16 million (about $277,000 USD).

The artist's renditions were for a 1973 1 Jiao, 1972 2 Jiao, 1973 5 Jiao, 1972 1 Yuan, 1973 2 Yuan, 1973 5 Yuan, and 1972 10 Yuan. The colorful group of notes, which were sold as a single lot, shows industrious scenes that include factory workers or iron smelters.

Lot 825: People’s Bank of China Complete Set of 7 Hand Executed Essay Pairs for Unissued Series of Renminbi, realized $277,000 USD at Spink’s January 2020 auction for “Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong”

Other currency highlights included:

  • Lot 2330: The Mercantile Bank of India $50 Specimen. 1.1.1930. Estimated at: HK$240,000-300,000. Sold for HK$400,000 ($51,474 USD)
  • Lot 2333: Mercantile Bank of India Limited 1935 $50, Serial Number 58025. Estimated at HK$200,000-300,000. Sold for HK$400,000 ($51,474 USD)
  • Lot Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China $500 Printer’s Model of Obverse. Sold within estimate of $HK1,800,000-2,400,000 for HK$290,000 ($37,318.70 USD)
Lot 2330: The Mercantile Bank of India $50 Specimen features boat at upper center, “50” at each corner. The reverse is brown and black with Mercury at center. The note sold for around $37,000 USD at the Spink January 2020 auction.
