ATM Withdrawal Includes an Out-of-the-Ordinary Bill
Ronald McKernan’s ordinary ATM withdrawal included an odd looking twenty-dollar bill.
According to the Federal Reserve, the lifespan of a twenty-dollar bill is approximately 7.8 years. However, Ronald McKernan's recent ATM withdrawal included a bill that defied those expectations by nearly 70 years.
After withdrawing $100 cash to spend on an upcoming vacation, McKernan noticed that one of the twenty-dollar bills he had received from the bank looked and felt different from the rest. He shared his find on Reddit, where it was upvoted more than 20,000 times. It also initiated quite a bit of discussion.
One Redditor noted that the Series 1934C $20 bills were printed between July 1946 and May 1949, although some sources state that the 1934C $20 bill featuring the old reverse was printed on January 7th, 1947, while the new reverse was printed on July 27th, 1948.
The Reddit discussion also focused on whether or not currency this old could still be used. The consensus was that while it could be, it shouldn't be. Although the bill is not in great shape, it is still likely worth slightly more than its face value.
McKernan told Newsweek that the bill stood out from the others because of its obvious age and that he had no plans to sell it. "I'll probably hold on to it, it's pretty cool," he said. However, he did say that while the note is cool, he quickly realized "that even though I'd never spend $20 on something like this, being the meathead I am, I would obviously hold on to it, making my $100 dollar withdrawal worth $80."
