Collectors are gearing up for an exciting auction featuring a diversified assortment of historic Greek currency

Collectors are gearing up for an exciting auction featuring a diverse array of historic Greek currency, including hundreds of coins and hundreds of notes. Bidding is already underway for the A. Karamitsos Live Internet Auction 720, which will be held Sept. 9-10, 2023.

The top coin in this auction is a Greece 1879A 10 Lepta graded NGC MS 65 RB (lot 6088) with a starting price of €12,000 (about $13,000). This coin features an image of King George I of Greece, who ascended the Greek throne in 1863 following a tumultuous period for the nation. His reign marked a pivotal era in Greek history, characterized by efforts to modernize and stabilize the country after years of upheaval. This particular coin’s grade is unsurpassed among 47 examples in the NGC Census.

The top note in this auction is a Cyprus / British Administration 1955-60 £5 graded PMG 53 About Uncirculated (lot 6644) with a starting price of 7,700 EUR (about $8,000). The 5 Pounds note represented the highest denomination within a relatively brief series of Cypriot currency. This series was likely produced in response to concerns held by Cypriot officials regarding potential economic instability in the future. Cyprus gained its independence just months after the March 1, 1960, date on this bank note.
