A major highlight of any Chicago Paper Money Expo is the auction and this year’s CPMX features another top-notch sale by Lyn Knight Currency Auctions. As in prior years, Knight has a lineup of rare and interesting notes set to cross the auction block, March 17-18 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare in Rosemont, Ill.
The leading entry for U.S. bank notes is lot 1083, a pair of $1 1899 large size Silver Certificates from the same block with serial numbers #99999999 and #10000000, Fr. 233. Both notes are graded by PCGS as About-New 58 Premium Paper Quality (PPQ).
The lot info notes many such pairs were broken up over time, making this set one of a few known in private hands. Estimate on the lot is between $35,000 to $50,000.
Another top note appearing in the auction is a 1917 Legal Tender Note with a #100000000 serial number Fr. 37, graded PCGS About-New 58, lot 1040. The description notes that "only four $1 1917 Legal Tenders with the nine digit serial #100,000,000 have either crossed the auction block or have been featured on dealer fixed price lists." The note has a $35,000 to $45,000 estimate.
The auction also includes 362 National Bank Notes, highlighted by a $5 1902 Red Seal, Fr. 587, from The First National Bank of Steamboat Springs, Col., W6454.
Displaying excellent pen signatures, “along with great color and paper quality,” the note is described by Knight as likely to bring smiles to many collectors. “The town and bank are a very exciting find to collectors of Colorado notes, cool notes and Red Seals.”
Also highlighting is a collection of Iowa National Bank Notes, including many rare and sought-after locations, such as a beautifully pen-signed No. 1 1902 Date Back Blue Seal $10 from The First National Bank of Laurens, Iowa, M4795.
“We have sold the only notes ever offered and that was two Blue Seals and one small size,” Knight said. “This amazing peach is one of only seven large notes reported.”
There is also a special collection of Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino County, Calif. National Bank Notes, many of which have been little available in the past 15 years.
And the sale features a wide variety of large-size type, including many high end circulated notes, colonials, confederate, fractionals, obsoletes, star notes and world offerings. Fancy serial numbers are also crossing the block, “featuring important pieces not seen since the Mel Wilmore collection was dispersed.”
World notes, topped by selections from Spain, the British Commonwealth and Vietnam, will be sold starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 17. The U.S. sale starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 18. There is no Saturday night session this year, and lot viewing is on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. only.
