One intriguing lot in Lyn Knight’s World Live Sale held on July 30-31 was a Netherlands Indies De Javasche Bank 200 gulden, P-83.
Dated 23 May 1938, this attractive piece is perhaps the scarcest denomination of the NEI dancer series, especially in collectable grade. It is not illustrated in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, which assign it a value of just $1,250 in UNC.
The example on offer was graded VF with a tiny split at left center. It was the first such example Knight’s had ever handled.
SCWPM notwithstanding, Joel Shafer had not hesitated to assign an estimate of $12,500-17,500. He was certainly in the right ballpark. When the dust settled, the note had realized $12,000 including commission.
A second example of a similar grade took just $7,170 in Dec. 2016.
