Heritage Auctions brought some interesting Proofs and Silver Certificates to their Oct. 29, 2019, U.S. weekly auction. Their World Currency auction, also on Oct. 29, had two notes that caught my eye: a Cuba Banco Nacional 500 pesos and an Equatorial African States Banque Centrale 1000 Francs. Full catalog details and hammer prices are available from currency.ha.com/. A buyer’s premium of 20% has been included in all prices shown.
The three Silver Certificates I kept my eye on were Lot# 84456, Lot# 84478 and Lot# 84480. The first lot #84456 (KL# 217) was a Fr.# 87 Large Size $5 1907 Silver Certificate, PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ bank note. The Henry Gugler design, used from 1869 to 1907, features The Pioneer vignette at center and Andrew Jackson at lower left. There is an ornamental red “V” at left. Red serial numbers and a small red seal are also on the front. The signatures on the note are Parker and Burke. The piece sold for $720.
The second lot I observed was #84478 (KL #238), a Fr.# 268 Large Size $5 1896 Silver Certificate, PMG Very Fine 20 bank note. The vignette at center is adapted from the painting by Walter Shirlaw of Electricity Presenting Light to the World. There is a small red seal at right and the note is signed by Tillman-Morgan. Generating 11 bids, the lot went for $2,400.
The third lot that caught my attention, #84480 (KL #241) was a Fr.# 271 Large Size $5 1899 Silver Certificate, PMG Very Fine 25 bank note. The figure at center is a George Frederick Cumming (G.F.C.) Smillie engraving of Chief Tatoka-Inyanka (Running Antelope) of the Hunkpapa Sioux. There is an ornamental blue “V” at left. Blue serial numbers and a small blue seal are also on the front. The signatures on the note are Lyons-Roberts. The bank note sold for $696.
A couple of high-grade Proofs caught my eye. Lot #84187 is a $10 Proof from the Manufacturers and Mechanics Bank, Philadelphia, Pa. in PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. The note is an unlisted variant with a red "10" protector, on an archive (unstamped) book card and is hole punch canceled. The vignettes feature agriculture and logging themes. The Proof sold for $360.
Lot #84206, Northhousen, WI, Buffalo County Bank $1 Proof in PCGS Very Choice New 64 was in the Eric P. Newman Collection. The note has a buffalo hunting vignette at left and a beaver-themed vignette at upper right and is hole punch canceled. The lot went for $2160.
The two world notes, one from Cuba and the second from the Equatorial African States were nice examples. The Lot #89071 Cuba, Banco Nacional De Cuba 500 pesos note (P# 83), PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ is a high-grade example that generated 17 bids. It sold for $312.
Lot #89092 was an ND 1963, 1000 Francs, Equatorial African States, Banque Centrale (P# 5h) PCGS Extremely Fine 40 note. The note front depicts people gathering cotton and the back depicts men logging. The note sold for $204, with 3 bids.
