Early American coinage highlighted an auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries conducted in late October during the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo.
Over $12.7 million worth of U.S. coins were sold.
The results were topped by a $660,000 realization by Lot 7151, a unique Judd-3 1792 Birch cent with a plain edge that is pedigreed back to Ed. Cogan’s sale of December 1859.
The firm said it had been acquired by the Archangel Collection of Colonial and 1792 Coinage from the May 1976 sale of the Laird Park Collection.
Other 1792 pattern coinage included a Professional Grading Service AU58+ CAC-stickered 1792 copper disme that sold for $360,000 as Lot 7153.
Close behind at $336,000 was Lot 7152, a 1792 silver center cent once owned by Dr. J. Hewitt Judd and used to illustrate the issue in his pattern reference book.
It was certified SP-45 by PCGS with CAC sticker. The last time it appeared at public auction was over 111 years ago.
A PCGS MS-63 1792 half disme with CAC sticker realized $240,000 as Lot 150.
