The first 13 $5 coins in a new presidential coin series authorized by the Republic of Liberia were released on Presidents Day, Feb. 15, according to distributor PandaAmerica.
The African country was founded by freed American slaves in 1847 and has been associated with several U.S. Presidents. Its capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia, and in 1862 President Abraham Lincoln extended official recognition to Liberia. Jimmy Carter visited Liberia in 1978, as did George W. Bush in 2008.
Each proof-like BU 2010 coin features a full color portrait with an associated image in the background. The coins measure 40mm in diameter and consist of copper-nickel layered with pure silver.
They are on sale for $15.95 each plus $5 shipping per order from PandaAmerica: 3460 Torrance Blvd., Suite 100, Torrance, CA 90503; www.PandaAmerica.com; (800) 472-6327.
