A unique art installation was unveiled May 10 at the National Law Enforcement Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.: a replica of the U.S. Mint’s 2021 $5 gold commemorative coin honoring the memorial and museum, constructed of LEGOs®.

The art structure is a replica of the coin, featuring a male and female officer saluting on the obverse and a folded American flag on the reverse. The replica, created by master LEGO® builders Mel Brown and Jermaine Gardner, measures 5.5 feet in diameter and is 5.25 inches thick. It took approximately 82,500 LEGO bricks to complete.

The two builders, who donated their time, prepared for months. The construction itself took almost three weeks to complete.

The art installation is on display in the window of the Museum’s West Pavilion. The officers on the obverse, facing outward, are saluting 22,611 fallen officers whose names are engraved on the Memorial across the street.

The unveiling was aired live and can still be viewed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NLEOMF.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the fallen, telling the story of American law enforcement and making it safer for those who serve.
