New Details on Proof Silver American Eagles

2023 Silver Proof American Eagle will be available Oct. 10 from the U.S. Mint

The much-anticipated 2023 silver proof American Eagle launches from the United States Mint on Oct. 10. Introduced in 1986, the now-iconic proof coins are collector versions of the official American Eagle silver bullion coins. Struck at the United States Mint in San Francisco, the classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman featured on the coin’s obverse has long been a collector favorite. Thanks to technological advancements in design and minting, these coins reveal some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible.

The obverse features a refreshed depiction of Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The United States Mint returned to its original historical assets to render a closer reflection of Weinman’s original vision that includes the addition of his traditional artist mark. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”

The coin bears the new reverse design introduced in 2021. To give the coins an added level of security, they are crafted with enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation.

The new reverse design features an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Each coin bears the “S” mintmark reflecting its striking at the San Francisco Mint.

The price is set at $80 per coin. There is no mintage cap, but a household order limit of 25 is in place. To order, visit catalog.usmint.gov.
