Tallchief Quarters are Available in Bags and Rolls
Slated for Oct. 23rd availability, the Maria Tallchief quarter is the latest release in the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarter program.
Dancer Maria Tallchief is the latest honoree in the U.S. Mint’s American Women's Quarter program. The coin was slated to be available in bags and rolls on Oct. 23.
The quarters in this series honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.
Maria Tallchief broke barriers as a dancer and a Native American exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina. Her role as the “Sugar Plum Fairy” in The Nutcracker was pivotal in the ballet’s success in America.

The coin’s reverse depicts Maria Tallchief spotlit in balletic pose and her Osage name, which translates to “Two Standards,” written in Osage orthography. Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “MARIA TALLCHIEF.”
The common obverse depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”
Bags of 100 coins are available in “P” and “D” mintmark options for $45 per roll. A two-roll set containing one “P” roll and one “D” roll is offered for $40. Finally, a three-coin set with a roll each of “P,” “D,” and “S” quarters goes for $60.
The Mint notes that “coins are rolled by an automated machine process and not by hand. We cannot guarantee that the obverse or reverse side of a coin will be at either end of a coin roll.”
