Tubman Commems Kick-Off 2024 Releases

The U.S. Mint will kick off 2024 with commemorative coins honoring Harriet Tubman and the bicentennial of her birth.

Harriet Tubman clad half dollar. The obverse depicts Harriet Tubman, who distinguished herself as the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the Civil War. The Combahee River Raid resulted in more than 700 enslaved persons in South Carolina being freed. In the background, two Civil War-era boats represent the raid. A new year means a fresh lineup of coins and coin products from the U.S. Mint. The 2024 range will kick off with commemorative coins honoring Harriet Tubman and the bicentennial of her birth. The coins, scheduled to be released Jan. 4, consist of a clad half dollar, a silver dollar, and a gold $5 coin. All three are available in proof and uncirculated versions.

Harriet Tubman gold $5. The obverse features a portrait of Tubman in her years following the Civil War. The reverse depicts both arms of an individual firmly clasping one arm of another individual, symbolizing the aid and care that she offered others throughout her life. Encircling the arms are inscriptions of her seven core values. United States Mint

The half dollar designs represent Tubman’s work as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War. The dollar designs reflect her work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Finally, the $5 designs represent her life after the Civil War.

On Nov. 28, the Mint hosted representatives from the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to ceremoniously strike coins at its Philadelphia location. Representatives visited the Mint at West Point on Nov. 30 to strike the $5 gold coin.

Surcharges of $35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar, and $5 for each clad half dollar will be split between the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
