H.P. Lovecraft is well known for his creation of Cthulhu, a cosmic entity that appears in one of his stories in 1928. Cthulhu is the representation of existential dread and is considered to be the High Priest of the Great Old Ones, a species that came from the stars and who’s city disappeared beneath the Earth’s crust long before humanity came along.
Since the original story was published, Cthulhu has been used in pop culture such as video games, tabletop games, graphic novels, and more. Now, the great entity has made its way onto coins.
On behalf of Palau, CIT launched a new coin featuring H.P. Lovecraft’s creation, with Cthulhu taking down a ship at sea on the reverse. The silver coin includes an antique finish, which emphasizes the deep grooves of Cthulhu’s tentacles. There is coloring on his eyes, bringing him to life.
Swirls resembling tentacles cover the obverse, with a portrait of Lovecraft himself hidden behind them.
With a face value of $20 and measuring 45mm and 3oz, this hefty coin has a mintage of only 750, making this coin one you’ll be able to brag to your friends about.
