Diamond-studded coins sell for $152,000 each

Berlin’s World Money Fair saw Australia’s Perth Mint launch a stunning gold $2,000. The 60.60 mm, 325.366 g (10 oz) .9999 fine gold coin came pavé-set with pink Argyle diamonds.
Those diamonds decorate a 14 g (0.45 oz) .8171 fine rose gold Chinese Phoenix, or Fenghuang, landing on a Paulownia tree. Three Paulownia flowers are also handset with pink Argyle diamonds.
The total diamond weight is approximately 1.22 carat. The coin’s maximum thickness including the diamonds is 12.83 mm. Designer is Aleysha Howarth.
In mid-March, the mint announced the entire mintage of eight $2,000 coins, with a combined retail value of AU$1.5 million [U.S.$1.2 million], had sold to owners in Australia, Europe and Asia.
The coins are a further addition to the range of luxury collectibles resulting from a partnership between Western Australia’s Perth Mint and Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine.
Other products have included the 2016 $5,000 Kimberley Treasure coin valued at AU$1 million that sold to an international buyer within 48 hours and the AU$1.8 million one-of-a-kind Australian Trilogy coin collection purchased by an anonymous Asian collector in 2017.
