In 2021 the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda started to issue an annual series of bullion gold coins in two denominations. 1.5-euro face value (1 oz. gold) and 15-euro cent (1/10th of oz. gold).

The Iberian Lynx was issued in 2021, followed by the Bull in 2022 and now in 2023 the Cartujano Horse.

The aim of these coins is to project the image of Spain and the Spanish culture, with the choice of representative animals of Spain on the reverse and an image of the “columnario” on the obverse, an unmistakable symbol of the historic Spanish silver coin that is recognized worldwide within numismatic culture.

The distinguishing feature of the 2022 1 oz. of gold issue, which makes it unique in the world of bullion coins, is the inclusion on the obverse of a security measure patented by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda itself, the quadruple latent image. This security measure makes it possible to see four different images in the same space on the coin, depending on the incidence of light and the angle at which it is viewed. The coin shows the mintmark, a five-pointed star, the graphic euro symbol and the silhouette of the “columnario”.

FNMT has issued a bullion coin in 2023 of 1 oz. of gold depicting, in the reverse, the image of another representative Spanish animal, in this case a CARTUJANO HORSE. The Carthusian horse, or Cartujano, is not a distinct breed of horse but rather an offshoot of the pure Spanish horse and is considered the purest strain remaining with one of the oldest stud books in the world.
