Irish Tokens Dominate Noonans Sale

The auction was one hundred percent sold, with the four highest prices all being paid for rare Irish Tokens.

Over 600 lots of British Trade Tokens, Tickets, and Passes were sold at Noonans Mayfair on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The sale was 100% sold, with the four highest prices all being paid for rare Irish Tokens.

19th Century Irish Halfpenny 1806. Noonans Mayfair

The highest price of the sale was for an exceptionally rare, if not unique, 19th Century Irish Halfpenny dating from 1806 that sold for a hammer price of £5,500 against an estimate of £500-1,000. It was bought by a private collector from Ireland [lot 507].

Miscellaneous Tokens and Checks, Co LIMERICK, Newcastle, Florence O’Connell. Noonans Mayfair

The final part of the Irish Tokens from the Collection of the late Barry Woodside achieved a hammer total of £17,895, with two notable examples being a farthing from Newcastle, County Limerick, engraved Florence O’Connell, Irish Woollen Warehouse, Bridge St., which sold for a hammer price of £2,600 against an estimate of £100-200 [lot 360].

Additionally, from Co. DUBLIN, Dublin, a token saying George Lynch, Elephant House, Lr. Sackville Street Portmanteau Manufacturer sold for £2,200 against an estimate of £80-100 [lot 334]. These were both bought by Irish Collectors.

18th Century Tokens, MUNSTER [Co Clare, Cork, Kerry], Prattent’s mule Halfpenny, bust of Bryen Boiromhe. Noonans Wayfair

Also from Ireland was an 18th Century Token from MUNSTER with a bust of Bryen Boiromhe, King of Munster, which sold for £1,400 against an estimate of £300-400 and was bought by a collector in the USA [lot 461].

19th Century Tokens, SUSSEX, Chichester, Henry Comper and Benjamin Charge, Five Shillings, 1811 Noonans Wayfair

From a North American Collection was a very rare 19th-century token from 1811 from Chichester in West Sussex bearing the names Henry Comper and Benjamin Charge that sold for a hammer price of £1,200 and was estimated at £600-800. It was bought by a collector in the USA [lot 488].
