The majority of currency collectors among readers are well aware of the impending International Paper Money Show. For those still catching up, the show is June 7 -10 at the Sheraton Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Among regular IPMS attendees are Lyn Knight Auctions. This year their world paper sale is scheduled for Thursday night, June 13.
At the time of writing the catalog was very much a work in progress but as of early May, some spectacular items had emerged although many grades and all estimates had yet to be assigned. Just a few are reported here. All details need to be checked-out in the published catalog.
From the Caribbean, there is a Bermuda 10 shillings of 30 September 1927(P-4). The grade is a most desirable PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ. It is followed a little later in the catalog by a British Caribbean Territories 100 dollar specimen of 1950 (P-6s). Here the grade is a more than acceptable WBG Ch. AU 58. The note is unpriced in UNC in SCWPM.
Egyptian notes are running hot these days. This should continue to be the case at the Knight sale where a 50 pounds specimen of 1 October 1912 (P-5s) will head to the block. Joel Shafer is considering assigning it a Choice XF/AU grade. The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money indicates it is available solely as a specimen and gives a valuation of $15,000 in UNC.
Possibly one for the WWII girls and boys is a Belgian Congo 500 francs with no date but c. 1941. This is P-18Aa as opposed to P-18. The SCWPM gives no values for any P-18A note in any grade.
And for those who just enjoy collecting rarities how about a Greenland 12 skilling of 1803 (P-A1)? This is an issue of Kongelig Grønlandske Handel [[Danish] Royal Greenland Trading Company] and was current for just one year - 1803. The following year all of the company’s notes were replaced by issues of Handelsstederne i Grønland. That one offer can be considered rare in high grade.
