From a recent press release by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation®, we have learned that one of the coins headed to the Heritage Auction in Dallas this Oct. 17-19, is a 1776 Continental Dollar certified by NGC®.

According to the site, just two weeks before the sale, bidding has already surpassed $100,000.

The Continental Dollar's reverse has the names of the colonies in a ring formation with the words, "AMERICAN CONGRESS" and "WE ARE ONE" in the center.

While numismatic researchers seem to agree that these rare coins were minted in the late 18th century, no one knows who minted them, where, or why. No official records ordering them are known to exist.
