Smartminting® 4.0 Launches with Iron Knight

Smartminting® has come a long way over the years. Technological advancements have allowed the high relief to become 100 percent higher than before.

Smartminting® is a term most collectors of modern coins recognize and probably associate with “high relief.” B.H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt GmbH and CIT developed this revolutionary technology.

Smartminting® has come a long way over the years. It doesn’t seem that long ago when CIT announced their Smartminting Reloaded at the World Money Fair in 2020. The advancement in technology allowed for the high relief to become 100 percent higher than before. It also allowed for the highest point of the design to be off-center and on both sides of the coin. The technology was showcased by the release of the Majestic Eagle coins in silver, gold, and copper.

Released in 2020 under Smartminting Reloaded, the Majestic Eagle pushed the boundaries of high-relief coins, bringing the high relief to both sides of the coin in a proof finish. CIT

Technology continued to advance, allowing for coins to have not only incredibly high relief but also stunning detail. The Tiffany Art Metropolis series shows ultra-high relief coins with the tiniest details taken into account, such as the numbers and hands on the clocks of St. Peter’s Basilica or the intricate details of the London Westminster Palace.

Collectors have come to expect high-relief coins from CIT, which makes this coin so special. The Grand Canyon coin replicates the famous canyon in a topographic map that cuts across the coin. The ultra-high relief becomes an ultra-low relief. CIT

Smartminting® allows for high relief on both sides of the coins, which creates a whole new interactive side of coin collecting. CIT has released its Historical Monuments collection, which features sites such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, and the Temple of Heaven. These coins can be stood up on their edge. The tiny 1oz Gilded Dragon coin can also be placed standing up, a fun way to display a collection.

The Silver Burst 3.0 coin released in 2023 boasts a multifaceted surface, creating numerous flat surfaces and edges. CIT

The 2024 Winter Launch introduced us to the latest advancement: Smartminting® 4.0. The Iron Knight is a stunning example of what this means for the future of modern coin collecting. The ultra-high relief is taken to the next level, making a relief of 9mm possible. This is 50 percent higher than ever before, all while maintaining a Proof quality.

CIT launched the Iron Knight during their Winter Launch of this year, introducing Smartminting® 4.0. CIT

The Iron Knight is in full armor with a shield and morning star. On this coin, the knight comes to life, stepping out of the scene towards the viewer, the toe of his boot stepping on the rim. Even with all this high relief, the coin never loses a detail—from the bricks of the imposing castle in the background to the links of chainmail and the dragon’s scales on the knight’s shield. The more you look, the more you find.

Collectors of modern coins will want to keep their eye out for what comes next. The possibilities created by the newest technology are endless and have already begun to change the collecting game. These ultra-high relief coins will appeal to collectors of all ages and will catch the eye of people just entering the hobby.
