1913 doesn’t sell
The 1913 Liberty Head nickel offered in the Jan. 2 Stack’s auction did not sell.
There?s still a chance to own the finest-known 1913 Liberty Head nickel.
The coin was the highlight lot of Stack?s Orlando Sale Jan. 2, but the bids offered failed to meet an undisclosed reserve price.
Consigned by Bruce Morelan, the 1913 nickel was once part of the Eliasberg Collection. It is only the fifth 1913 Liberty Head nickel to ever surface. It sold in a private treaty sale for a reported $4.15 million in 2005.
It was thought before the auction to be a challenger to such famous sales as the $7,590,020 price achieved in 2002 by the only legal 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece, or the $4,140,000 price paid for the Childs specimen of the 1804 $1 auctioned in 1999.
Overall, the Stack?s Jan. 2 auction totaled $7,401,857, including the 15-percent buyer?s fees (individual lots listed also include the fee).
The auction was held at the Renaissance Hotel at Sea World in Orlando, Fla., prior to the start of the Florida United Numismatists annual show.
The top-selling of the 1,599 lots was No. 1410, a Proof-66 1870 Coronet double eagle that sold for $368,000, with none finer ever graded by Professional Coin Grading Service.
Other significant lots included:
- A brilliant uncirculated 1795 half dime, Lot 352, graded MS-67 by PCGS, with three graded by the company and none finer, sold for $184,000.
- Lot 568, a 1918/7-S quarter, graded MS-65 by PCGS, sold for $100,625. It is one of only three graded by PCGS, with two of them finer.
- Lot 1009 was an 1886 proof gold set ($1, $2.50, $3, $5, $10 and $20) that sold for $230,000. The six coins were Cameo or Ultra Cameo and ranged from Proof- 64 to Proof-66, all graded by National Guaranty Corp.
- An 1879 Flowing Hair $4 gold piece, graded Proof-64 by PCGS, Lot 1249, sold for $149,500.
- A cameo proof 1879 $20, Lot 1422, graded Proof-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., sold for $172,500. It is the only one in NGC?s population.
