On May 20, the United States Mint began offering a commemorative American Legion 100th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar and Medal Set. This set recognizes the 100th anniversary of the founding of The American Legion on March 15, 1919 in Paris, France.

Included in the set are an American Legion 100th Anniversary Proof Silver Dollar and an American Veterans Silver Medal, which is only available in silver as a part of this set. While the total mintage of the silver dollar is 400,000, only 10,000 of the silver medal will be struck.

The exclusive medal design displays a bald eagle spreading its wings, preparing for flight, which suggests the initiative, determination and personal courage required by those who serve, or served, in our Nation’s Armed Forces. The five stars represent the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. An inscription, “HONORING AMERICA’S VETERANS” encircles the design.

On the reverse you will see a field of stars symbolizing all veterans – past, present and future. A lone star incused below the field represents veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. The absence of this star in the field conveys the supreme sense of loss to the Nation. The inscription reads “SERVICE AND SACRIFICE.”

Both the coin and medal are composed of 99.9% silver. The retail price is set at $99.95 and can be purchased from the U.S. Mint at www.usmint.gov or by calling 800-USA-MINT. All images courtesy of the U.S. Mint.
