Eric P. Newman, noted numismatist, collector and scholar, celebrated his 100th birthday May 25.

In his honor, the ANS commissioned artist Amy Kann to create a bas-relief portrait of Newman. At his birthday celebration, ANS Chairman of the Board, Kenneth L. Edlow, presented Newman with the framed portrait.

The two-sided limited edition medal will utilize the design of the bas-relief portrait of Newman on the obverse. The reverse depicts Newman seated and reading at a desk. The Newman medal will be struck in both bronze and silver after the subscription period on Jan. 13, 2012.

Both medals measure 2.4 by 3.44 inches. The bronze weighs 198.2 grams and the silver is 226.3 grams.
