Orders will be accepted by the U.S. Mint beginning Sept. 2 for proof and uncirculated examples of the First Spouse half-ounce $10 gold coin for President James Buchanan.

Because he was unmarried when he lived in the White House, the obverse will feature the Coronet Liberty Head design used on gold coins issued during his administration 1857-1861.

Price was not yet available as of press time, but the Mint establishes prices based on the fluctuating market price of gold. However, proofs of prior issues were $779 and the uncirculateds were $766 each.

Mintage will be limited to a maximum of 15,000 of both qualities combined. The precise mixture will be determined by what collectors buy.

Sales of recent issues have been the 6,000 to 8,000 range, with proofs enjoying a roughly 2-1 numerical advantage.
