Early birds beat the rush at NYINC

The market for world coins showed sustained strength at the New York International Numismatic Convention Jan. 10-13 in New York City.
Collectors and other buyers came early to the show, resulting in a busy Professional Preview period.

?We had about a 15-percent increase of early birds,? said Mark Teller, treasurer of the NYINC show and principal of world coin dealership M. Louis Teller, Encino, Calif.

Early bird attendees were non-tabled dealers and collectors who paid $100 for access to the bourse during the Professional Preview period 2-7 p.m. Thursday.

Bourse chairman Kevin Foley reported 186 Professional Preview registrants, up 15 percent over the 2006 show and double the number of six years ago when Foley took on the bourse chairman role.

?My personal sales approach the largest I?ve had at any NYINC and exceeded the ANA (the American Numismatic Association convention in August 2006), which was also good,? Teller continued. ?In general I would say the market is ablaze.?

These high spirits were echoed by Victor England of Classical Numismatic Group, based in Lancaster, Pa.

?Top material was selling for record prices,? England said, referring to his firm?s $5.9 million auction in conjuction with the show. He noted that total presale estimate had been $4.1 million. ?Our regular collector market was able to buy coins, and not at the highest levels. I consider this healthy for the market.?

Nine different firms held auctions at the show, starting the weekend prior.
Diverse eductional activities put together by Educational Program Chairman Kerry Wetterstrom included meetings of the Russian Numismatic Society, Ancient Coin Collectors Guild, Association of Dedicated Byzantine Collectors, Classical and Medieval Collectors Society, Societe Americaine pour L?Etude de la Numismatique Francaise, Society for Ancient Numismatics, Bermanian Guild of Numismatists and the Medal Collectors of America. A Young Numismatists program was overseen by Larry Gentile.

Next year?s NYINC will take place Jan. 10-13, 2008, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, 301 Park Ave., New York City.
