The last time a Jack Lee collection of coins was put up for auction was 1995.
Now, a decade later, the Jack Lee Collection III is set to anchor Heritage’s Nov. 3 Platinum Night session of the company’s Signature Auction at Palm Beach, Fla.
“Jack Lee’s first collection was sold in the early 1990s; it contained Morgan dollars (business strikes and proofs), Peace dollars, and Walkers that we all considered the best at that time,” said Heritage President Greg Rohan.
“Jack started immediately collecting again – even rebuying and selling many of his ‘Lee I’ coins – sometimes over and over again. His second collection was sold five years later, and Jack Lee II pedigreed coins are as avidly sought as Jack Lee I.”
Highlighting the Lee Collection III sale is a 1795 half dime, graded MS-67 Prooflike by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., and a 1942/1 dime with full bands, graded MS-66 by Professional Coin Grading Service.
There’s also a pewter 1776 Continental dollar, “Currency,” in MS-64 condition, as graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
Heritage’s Signature Auction is scheduled to take place Nov. 2-5 as part of the Palm Beach Coin Show.
“This is sure to be a spectacular event,” said Rohan. “There are more than $35 million worth of coins consigned to this auction.”
Included are a number of anchor consignments, including the Philip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage. Rohan calls it “the most valuable single session one-owner coin auction of all time.”
“While there are many amazing double eagles in the Morse Collection, the two most extraordinary and most valuable are his essentially perfect MCMVII Ultra High Relief, certified by PCGS as Proof-69, and his 1927-D $20, certified MS-67 by PCGS,” said Jim Halperin, co-chairman of Heritage.
“Together, these two coins are expected to realize around $5 million.”
In all, Heritage secured 230 consignments for the Signature Auction.
