The 2012 Infantry Soldier silver dollar, a commemorative coin honoring the United States Infantry, will be available early next year, says the U.S. Mint.
Up to 350,000 silver dollars may be issued. Coins will be available in both proof and uncirculated versions and will be produced at the West Point facility. The 1.5-inch coin will be 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.
On Oct. 27, an official test strike of the 2012 Infantry Soldier silver dollar was used for the coin toss in the second Doughboy football game in Columbus, Ga. The test strike was produced at the Philadelphia Mint and was later melted.
The obverse design features a modern Infantry soldier on rocky ground charging forward and beckoning the troops to follow, symbolizing the “Follow Me” motto of the Infantry. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2012. The reverse features the crossed rifles insignia of the Infantry. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
A portion of the proceeds from the 2012 Infantry Soldier silver dollar coin sales will go to support the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center.
