Medal debuts in New York ceremony

Sales of up to 2 million 1 ounce silver medals marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center began June 20.

A special ceremony marking the availability of the new medal was held on the same date in New York City at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site.

Over 400 years of micro-nation coinage.

Heading the dignitaries at the event was Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios and U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who was a sponsor of the medal’s authorizing legislation.

Nadler and Rios gave what the Mint calls a shadowbox with a medal in it to Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

“This medal’s design is intended to exalt the memory of those that sacrificed their lives or were injured, and the families who continue to show dignity and strength in the face of terrible loss,” Rios said.

It shows Miss Liberty holding the Lamp of Remembrance on obverse and an eagle on the reverse with cascading water behind it symbolizing peace, serenity, healing and continuity of life, according to the Mint’s description.

Issue price of the medal is $56.95 until Aug. 18. Then the price will be $66.95.

The Mint expects to strike others at Philadelphia that will have a “P” mintmark.

Production is expected to be divided evenly between the two facilities.
