The honeymoon is over, literally. At least for me it is.
After a week of vacationing with my lovely new bride in beautiful Door County here in Wisconsin, I’m back at NN headquarters, eager to dole out the statistics that you need to stay abreast of what’s happening with the U.S. Mint.
The end of the year is fast approaching. Soon, we’ll be ringing in a new year with champagne and Dick Clark and saying goodbye to this one.
With regard to numismatics, it’s been quite a ride in 2005, what with the return of the Buffalo nickel and the hot-selling Marine Corps 230th anniversary silver dollar commemorative.
Will 2006 bring more of the same numismatic excitement? Will it be anywhere near as memorable?
It’s difficult to say at this point, but it’ll be hard to top 2005. Along with the five new state quarters issued this year – West Virginia being the latest, with initial sales figures listed in the boxes – there was the stunning discovery of 10 1933 double eagles. And the Westward Journey nickel series continued on, with the release of the aforementioned Buffalo nickel and the Ocean in View nickel.
Speaking of which, the 2005 Westward Journey nickel set seems to be catching the attention of collectors throughout the country. I’ve received a number of calls recently, asking how the set is selling. Released along with the Mint’s fall catalog, which came out in September, the set seems to be experiencing strong sales.
A total of 176,707 have been sold so far. That’s up significantly from the 142,805 reported in the Oct. 25 edition of NN, and the 106,737 reported in the Oct. 18 issue.
Another product that was released with the catalog is the 2005 50 State Quarters Greetings From America set. Initial sales figures for that product are also included this week, as are production figures for the Kansas quarter.
As you well know, the West Virginia quarter was the last of the 2005 issues, which included California, Oregon, Minnesota, Kansas and West Virginia.
