Collectors were quick off the mark Jan. 4 when the U.S. Mint put the 2018-W proof silver American Eagle on sale.
By the Jan. 7 weekly report, collectors were credited with taking 211,071 pieces.
Issue price of $55.95 is $2 more than the 2017-W proof, which the Mint continues to sell on its website. The 2016-W proof is also still available from the Mint for $53.95.
Fans of proof silver Eagles will have another coin to add to their collections come summer when the Mint will offer a 2018-S regular mirror proof struck at the western minting facility.
Silver Eagles have been a collector favorite for years. It has been part of a trend toward large silver coins and away from smaller issues.
