SoCal show attendance doubles
Attendance at the July 14-16 SoCal Coin and Currency Show, held at the Ontario, Calif., Convention Center, doubled over the previous show, according to organizer CK Shows. Contributing to the event’s success was a Scout Merit Badge Workshop that drew 84 Boy and Girl Scouts over two days. More than 60 leaders and family members participated in the learning activities. Classes were taught by Patti Finner, former vice president of the American Numismatic Association.

Many Scouts stayed at the show after the workshop. “The boys have never been to a coin and paper money show before and are thrilled with the experience!” said a Boy Scout leader. “They want to know when they can come again.”
The first lady of the Civil War, Mary Todd Lincoln, was reenacted by an actress who browsed the bourse floor. “Mrs. Lincoln” hosted mini coin classes for children ages 6-12 and handed out slabbed Lincoln cents donated by a dealer.
Mexican coin collectors visited with special guest Art Garnett, author of Tokens of Latin America and contributor to the first Krause Publications Standard Catalog of World Coins. Other featured authors included Cindy Mohon, author of The Complete Guide to Shield and Liberty Head Nickels, and Selby Ungar, author of Carson City Morgan Dollars: Featuring the Coins of the GSA Hoard.
A show highlight for coin collectors was the Stella, an 1879 Flowing Hair $4 gold piece exhibited by Tangible Investments. One of 425, the coin’s value is estimated at $200,000.
When it came to bourse activity, dealers and attendees alike appeared happy with the results.
Carl Sandburg of Santee Coins said, “The last day of coin shows, I usually get all my paperwork done. I was too busy to do anything except talk to people and show coins! I’m looking forward to the next SoCal Ontario show in December.”
“I found everything I wanted,” said an attendee from Portland, Ore. “It was a good mix of dealers.”
Five coin clubs staffed tables, displayed exhibits and offered free numismatic materials.
Alex Jaramillo, president of the San Bernardino Coin Club, said, “The collectors I spoke with were very interested, especially about attending our next club show.”
“We provided club info to several people and we expect new members as a result of our efforts,” said Robert Wu, treasurer of the Long Beach Coin Club.
The SoCal Coin and Currency Show is held twice a year. This year’s winter show is set for Dec. 8-10 at the same location. Table fees start at $295, Early Bird admission is $25 and general admission is $2.
