Retired “Coins” Magazine editor did double duty Aug. 16 at the NLG Bash. His original research into how the 1913 Liberty Head nickel became known to the hobby earned him the James L. Miller Memorial Award.

The James L. Miller Memorial Award was given to Robert Van Ryzin Aug. 16 at the Numismatic Literary Guild Bash in Philadelphia.

Now retired from his post of Coins Magazine editor, Van Ryzin wrote “Shadowy rarity: 1913 nickel first seen in 1919, not 1920.”

This article appeared in the Aug. 1, 2017, Numismatic News. He provides evidence that the first viewing of the 1913 Liberty Head nickels by prominent numismatists occurred in 1919 rather than in 1920 as previously believed.

Van Ryzin also gave the top NLG Award, the Clemy, to writer, researcher, and grading firm employee David W. Lange.

The NLG is a nonprofit organization composed of editors, authors, writers, bloggers and content producers who cover news and feature stories about all forms of money, medals and tokens as collectibles.

Members gather annually at a bash held in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money.

These awards are given to recognize the best work and outstanding individual contributions of the prior year.

As last year’s Clemy Award winner, Van Ryzin also presented the 2018 award to David W. Lange.

To be eligible for consideration in any of the 2018 Numismatic Literary Guild award categories, entries had to have been published, released, or posted on the Internet between May 1, 2017, and April 30, 2018.
