Poll Question: Have there been any coins considered “common” that you still struggled to find? What was it, and how did you eventually find it?
The respondents’ answers to the October 18, 2024, Numismatic News E-Newsletter Readers’ Poll vary widely.
The Montana / Glacier ATB Quarter has been elusive for me. I have found only three in a couple of hundred quarter rolls. I frequently see all the other western states on the East Coast, so it shouldn’t have any effect.

I searched all of 2021 for a 2021 Lincoln Cent P or D and did not get one in change until March 2022.

I firmly believe that in virtually every series, there are the well-known 'key' coins, and then there are 'sleepers,' i.e., dates that are much tougher to locate and perhaps are undervalued. The market seems to have rationalized the relationship between price and scarcity for the most heavily collected series like Lincoln cents and Morgan dollars. However, there are still unrecognized tough coins in other series. A few that come to mind are mid to high grade and mint state 1910 Barber half dollars, and more recognized now than in the past, 1919-D & S and 1920-D Standing quarters.
The search and learning that ensues make this hobby so much fun.
