Poll Question: Will your coin collection be affected if the United States implements tariffs? Why or why not?
The respondents to our April 11, 2025, poll are divided, but most believe their collecting will not be affected.
Yes, because dealers will use any tariff scheme as an excuse to price gouge.

I don't think that we will be affected at all by the new tariffs because we, for the most part, buy our coins from American-based dealers/sellers.

Obviously, if trying to buy coins from an international dealer, it will impact those collectors’ prices. That said, who knows how this will end.

I initially thought the U.S. government would not charge a tariff on foreign coins or foreign commemoratives (coins and medals) imported into the USA. However, knowing that President Trump is looking for ways to raise money to pay off our debt, I would not be surprised if a tariff was put in place on items imported as collectible items, such as coins, bars, and other items. Trump is trying to make a point and will be going after everything, knowing that some manufacturers and public groups will push back and there will be compromises made, resulting in a smaller tariff or no tariff on some items. I just hope that collectible coins and medals are not subject to a tariff.

No effect.

It will have absolutely no effect on U.S. coin collecting. I hope that it will minimize the foreign coin focus that seems to be dominating the U.S. coin-collecting hobby and publications these days to the inattention and neglect of rich information supplanted by foreign subjects. After all, it is the U.S. coin-collecting hobby and success that created the interest elsewhere.

It is hard to tell with all the uncertainty involved. But a trade war, or even the possibility of a trade war, could very well lead to a global recession, which would put a big dent in discretionary spending and negatively impact the coin market.

Yes, I have already seen the impact of tariffs on collecting as I purchased many coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. Although many of these coins are minted of precious metals, they are not considered bullion per se and thus may be subject to tariffs. I have already seen delays in shipments and uncertainty of tariffs and their potential impact on coins being exported from Canada to the US. Hopefully, it is resolved, as facing a 20 percent or higher increase in the effective price of Canadian commemoratives would likely reduce overall demand.

Quite possibly if buying from an overseas market!
