With heavy hearts we are reporting the passing of Sol Taylor, known to many as ‘The Lincoln Cent Expert’ in the hobby.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1931, Sol became a collector at an early age, when he began collecting in 1937. He attended Tilden High School and later Brooklyn College. After service on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1953 to 1955 he taught high school in New York before moving to California to teach and complete his Doctorate in education from USC in 1971. He served as professor at Chapman College in Orange County from 1972-1982 before moving to the San Fernando Valley.
Sol founded the Society of Lincoln Cent Collectors and served as president from 1982-2009. He was a 50 year member of the ANA, Numismatists Association of Southern California and Whittier Coin Club. He wrote the ‘It Makes Cents’ column in The California Numismatists (TCN) publication on a regular basis. He is also the author of the well-known Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent. During his lifetime he won several awards for his articles from the Numismatic Literary Guild.
He leaves behind his wife, Pearl, four children and nine grandchildren.
