Poll Question: What’s one numismatic mystery you wish could be solved?
From Oak Island gold to the 1913 Liberty nickel, readers who weighed in on the March 28, 2025, poll shared the numismatic mysteries they most want solved.
There's undoubtedly a lot more treasure somewhere on Oak Island. It has been visited as far back as the 8th and 9th centuries. The Knights Templar and Blackbeard, the Privateer turned Pirate, were stashing gold and reportedly "The Holy Grail."
Did the Lagina brothers give up their hunt? Or did they find the "Booty" and keep quiet about it?
With all of the work that went into digging tunnels, the massive drilling equipment that proved there was a capstone down there, and all of the untimely deaths throughout the ages, there must be something of great value still buried on Oak Island.

I would like to know the story behind the 72,000 1901-S quarters. Clearly, there are far fewer in existence, but why?

A mystery to be solved? Why has every current circulating coin featured a design change on its obverse, reverse, or both... except the dime? Same ol' same ol' for 80 years. Why? Some say it's not worth having a designer and engraver fashion a new obverse or reverse because the coin is so tiny. That's hogwash and pigeon poop. And yes, I know it's finally changing next year, at least temporarily, for the semi-quincentennial.

I have a Liberty Seated CC silver dollar rated VG. It looks beautiful, and only 2,600 were minted. Why is it devalued so much when CLEANED? IT’S RARE. I paid 10,700.00 for it. Nice detail.

One mystery I'd like solved is to determine for sure who made the 1913 Liberty Nickels.
Louis Ludiciani, Cumberland, R.I.
I'd love to know for sure whether the U.S. Mint produced any silver Peace dollars in 1964, and if so, how many and where they ended up.
Mark Vezzola, San Diego, Calif.
Well, for me, that's gotta be the mystery of the 1895 Morgan dollar. What exactly happened to those supposedly 12,000 minted coins?!? I still wait, thinking maybe, just maybe, one will turn up someday.

Where is the MS69 1909 S VDB that I keep searching for?
