The Most Historically Significant Coin category stirred up quite a whirlwind of philosophical discussion in the Nominating Committee in this round. This debate whirled around the notion of whether “Birth” and “Death” anniversary coins of historical figures held as much significance as coins commemorating a specific event, a personal achievement, a global development, a scientific or geographic discovery. The victorious emergence of the Royal Mint’s Centenary of the Discovery of Insulin 50 pence seemed to me to be the Judges Panel having their say.
