'Tis the Season for Auctions

It’s snowing up here in Stevens Point, Wis., home of the Numismatic News offices. At the time of this writing. It’s time to hunker down, drink something warm and relax. And while the weather here is chilly, the current online bidding for the Heritage U.S. Coins Signature Auction during Dec. 5-8 is surely heating up.

The item with the highest online bid at the time of writing is a 1907 High Relief double eagle graded MS-68 by NGC. It has a wire rim and is one of the finest pieces known. The current online bid is $39,000. Including the buyer’s premium, it is $46,800. So, it’s certainly not too cold for eagles to soar.

Next is an 1892-S Morgan silver dollar. This coin is graded MS-61 by NGC and described by Heritage as an important Mint state rarity. This coin is recognized as rare in all uncirculated grades. This particular example has bagmark-free surfaces and a bright silver luster, according to Heritage. Its current online bid is at $27,000, making it $32,400 with the Buyer’s premium.

With these two in mind, it will be interesting to see which coins come out on top.
